The early impact of mixed canopies with Norway spruce, European beech and silver fir on a new forest floor

چکیده
Abstract The character of pure or mixed forest canopies and their litterfalls contribute to different forest-floor properties. These organic layers also subjacent topsoil were studied at three study sites covered by treatments such as beech–spruce, beech–fir, spruce–fir two monospecific beech spruce treatments. age the stands ranged from 11 15 years when sampled. All used meadows afforested; therefore, floors new, A-horizon properties not influenced older humus inherited previous generations. mineral soil was likely affected levels former fertilization, which resulted in differences among sites. early-developed showed between with others. below had more nitrogen, oxidizable carbon cations exchangeable hydrogen well pH showing acidic conditions lower contents saturation base cations. Pure phosphorus. nutrient pools did differ treatments; significantly matter found oldest on first afforested site, increased pools.

Fresh-stem bending of silver fir and Norway spruce.
The bending and growth characteristics of large fresh stems from four silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) and three Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) trees were studied. Twenty logs taken from different stem heights were subjected to four-point bending tests. From the bending test records, we calculated stress-strain curves, which accounted for detailed log taper, shear deformation and self wei...
متن کاملPolyphenols in the woody roots of Norway spruce and European beech reduce TTC.
A common method to determine the vitality of fine root tissue is the measurement of respiratory activity with triphenyltetrazolium chloride (TTC). The colorless TTC is reduced to the red-colored triphenyl formazan (TF) as a result of the dehydrogenase activity of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. However, measurements with woody fine roots of adult Norway spruce and European beech trees show...
متن کاملCarbon and Nitrogen Pools and Fluxes in Adjacent Mature Norway Spruce and European Beech Forests
We compared two adjacent mature forest ecosystem types (spruce vs. beech) to unravel the fate of assimilated carbon (C) and the cycling of organic and inorganic nitrogen (N) without the risk of the confounding influences of climatic and site differences when comparing different sites. The stock of C in biomass was higher (258 t·ha−1) in the older (150 years) beech stand compared to the younger ...
متن کاملFine Spatial Scale Variation of Soil Microbial Communities under European Beech and Norway Spruce
The complex interactions between trees and soil microbes in forests as well as their inherent seasonal and spatial variations are poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed the effects of major European tree species (Fagus sylvatica L. and Picea abies (L.) Karst) on soil bacterial and fungal communities. Mineral soil samples were collected from different depths (0-10, 10-20 cm) and at differ...
